What does the role of a Support Worker involve?


Support workers will work in a range of places – people’s supported living apartments or within the community, supporting people with social and physical activities that could include:

  • Cooking, eating and drinking
  • Booking and accompanying people to appointments
  • Undergoing basic medical checks
  • Assisting with personal care such as washing and dressing
  • Helping people to plan meals, cook, eat and drink
  • Monitoring individuals’ conditions, taking their temperature, pulse, respiration and weight, and helping with medication
  • Booking transport and accompanying on social outings

You will support lots of different people, including adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and other mental health conditions.

As a support worker, what’s most important is:


  • Kindness, patience and compassion
  • Good English, Maths and writing skills
  • An ability to understand and follow procedures
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Good communication and listening skills
