News & blogs Ceremonial tree planting takes place at our developing Community Orchard A new community orchard and sensory garden is taking root as we prepare to open our new green space for residents and the local community to enjoy later this Summer. Thanks to the support of our partners, funders and volunteers we’re now working on transforming the community space into a haven bursting with fruit trees, colourful plants, and accessible features for all. Support received towards these phases of work include a generous £11,289.04 grant from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, managed by Test Valley Borough Council on behalf of Central Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Fruit trees were also secured by Enham Alamein Parish Council from the Hampshire Forest Partnership, who are also supporting an Interpretation Board as part of the Coronation Living Heritage Fund. The first fruit trees were ceremoniously planted at the end of March by local Councillors from Test Valley Borough Council, the Enham Alamein Parish Council and representatives from the Hampshire Forest Partnership. This marks the beginning of what promises to be a wonderful space for learning, connection and relaxation. Nigel Sully, Head of Gardening and Domestics at Enham Trust, shared his vision: “Ultimately the vision is to provide a space where the community can come together to learn to grow food, have access to free food, provide volunteering and learning opportunities to local residents and most importantly, be accessible so that all village residents, including those with a disability, can benefit from this exciting project. “This is a community led initiative that Enham Trust is proud to support. Once the groundworks and accessible planters, beds and benches are installed, we will look to develop a standalone community group that will help run and maintain the space.” The orchard is already taking shape, with pathways laid and beds prepared for more planting. Community involvement has been at the heart of the design, with local residents providing input during public consultations. By autumn, the first harvest of fruit will be ready for everyone to share. We’d also like to thank our army of corporate volunteers who have dedicated their time towards the transformation of this new green space, enabling this next phase of work to take place. Soon, the orchard and garden will feature accessible planters, benches and pathways - designed so everyone, regardless of ability, can join in. We look to officially open the Community Orchard and Walled Garden to the community late Summer 2025, so keep your eyes peeled for the announcement our official launch event on our website and social media.
