Permanent | Full Time (37.5 hrs per week) | Enham Alamein | £22,000 per year 

Enham Trust are looking for a Shop Manager will manage the daily operations of the charity shop and café. The role will be responsible for maximising store sales and profits. Our shop is reliant on donations from the public, you will be responsible for managing the flow of donations through to sale, maximising potential revenue in store, online and via gift aid.

You will manage a team of staff and volunteers and together you will ensure the shop is always fully stocked, of good appearance and health and safety is maintained at all times.

What You Will Be Doing


  • Ensuring stock is generated over the door by members of the public and donors sign up to the Gift Aid scheme.
  • Ensuring all stock is sorted, priced and steamed before going onto the store floor in a presentable manner.
  • Managing the café team and meeting all food hygiene and health & safety requirements.
  • Replenishment of café stock as required
  • Responsible for the daily management of the till system.


  • Achieve budget profile by maximising sales and minimising costs
  • Ensure that the high standard of service to customers that is expected is maintained at all times.
  • Run management information reports to identify opportunities to maximise the potential of different product categories and utilise these to drive the income of the store.
  • Actively support any charity wide fundraising promotions.

Shop and café Appearance

  • Maintain a high standard of presentation, both in the windows and the interior of the store and café
  • Ensure the sales floor layout maximises selling opportunities.
  • Achieve and maintain high standards of housekeeping, organisation and cleanliness throughout the store and café
  • Ensure the café is free of used items following customers use and hygiene standards are maintained.


  • Actively encourage the public to donate saleable stock.
  • Achieve gift aid sign ups to ensure gift aid income budget is met.
  • Ensure there is adequate flow of stock from the stockroom to the shop floor.
  • Ensure there is adequate stock available on the shop floor, at all times.
  • Select and price stock at a consistent level achieving the highest possible return.
  • Rotate stock on a frequent basis.
  • Ensure perishable goods in the café are in date.
  • Ensure that café food and drinks are replenished inline with stock levels.

People Management

  • Create and manage a rota to ensure the store runs effectively and the sales floor and sorting room tasks are allocated.
  • Actively recruit the appropriate number of volunteers to deliver the store objectives and budget.
  • Interview and train new staff members.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the team to ensure they reach their potential in line with Enham Trust’s policies and objectives.
  • Ensure that all team members have clear expectations and the support they need to achieve their objectives, addressing and individual or team performance or capability issues in a timely manner.
  • Identify and promote opportunities for volunteers, ensuring that volunteers are managed in accordance with Enham Trust’s policies and procedures.
  • Champion performance management culture and ensure that Trust performance manage practices are adopted throughout the services

Administration and Security

  • Ensure all relevant administration is completed on time.
  • Bank daily takings.
  • Key Holder, ensuring that the store is secure whenever it is left unattended.


  • Provide a safe environment that protects all staff/volunteers and the general public.
  • Comply with all Health & Safety regulations and complete monthly health & safety checks of the store.
  • Consistently role model Enham Trust’s values and behavioural competencies.
  • Keep abreast of best practice as it applies to the operations and take responsibility for own personal development.
  • Adhere to Trust policies and procedures and ensure that these are understood and adhered to throughout the services.
  • Willingly engage with any other duties and responsibilities that may be required from time to time.
  • As a senior manager, actively collaborate and engage with other functions and initiatives across the Trust.
  • Create and Health and Safety conscious culture, ensuring that all Health and Safety policies and practices are implemented to meet legal and moral obligations.
  • Attend and prepare for meetings and events, and write reports as required.

Person Specification

Skills & Knowledge

  • ·Ability to plan, organise, prioritise and delegate work with volunteers and paid staff.
  • ·Ability to attract, recruit, train, develop and support a team of volunteers and paid staff.
  • Demonstrate skills of good retail practice.
  • Knowledge of retail sales environment, ideally charitable.
  • Comfortable using till systems.
  • Working knowledge of welfare benefits and the funding of support services


  • Experience of working within retail.
  • Experience of managing a sales budget.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Experience of working in a café or food environment
  • Food Hygiene level 2.
