Direct Payments: Meet Glenn

Glenn is a Direct Payments customer from Bournemouth. This is his story about his experience with Enham Trust.

My name is Glenn and I live in Bournemouth with my mum who is my main carer.  I have severe learning difficulties and nocturnal epilepsy.  I require support 24 hours a day.

After an assessment by a social worker from Bournemouth Borough Council it was agreed I could receive direct payments and a referral was made to Enham Independent Living Service.  An advisor from the service visited me at home to fully explain the process and responsibilities of receiving direct payments.  They were also able to assist me to complete my support plan and work out how to use my budget to meet my needs.

As my sole carer my mum has always been very committed to caring for me, however, was finding it increasingly difficult due to her own health conditions.  Therefore as I get on so well with my sister, Lisa, I decided I would like her to be my personal assistant to support me in the mornings to help me to get ready to go to the day centre and also in with my evening routine.

Enham supported me to set up payroll, employer’s liability insurance and complete a job description and contract for my PA.  I use Enham payroll. As I am not able to understand the responsibilities of being an employer, my mum is the employer.  Payroll send her a payslip every month so she knows how much to pay my PA and how much needs to be paid to the HMRC.  An advisor also comes to my house to complete the financial returns every 3 months.

Receiving direct payment has made a real difference to me and my mum.  My mum didn’t realise how much support she was giving me and the toll it was taking on her.  She is now able to cope much better with her caring role. 

My mum knows that she can contact Enham in the future regarding my direct payments.

As for me, things are going well with my PA Lisa. Lisa has set me goals to achieve; one of them was overcoming my fear of going to the barbers.  Due to me being so scared my mum has always had to cut my hair at home. Lisa gradually introduced me to new environment and she and my barber ‘Amber’ worked together to ensure that I was happy and comfortable.  I now go every 4 weeks and I enjoy it, is now part of my routine.
